Fields of Interest

Description of Scientific Projects

My research involves problems related to the coupling of tropical rainfall to the large scale circulation, and in particular how deep convection interacts with equatorial wave disturbances. Such waves interact over a wide range of scales, leading to sources of variability in both the atmosphere and ocean from the hourly to the interannual ranges and beyond. We use a variety of observational data analysis techniques to test theoretical predictions of how convective coupling will affect the climate system. Simple models are another useful tool in this regard. Ultimately, our goal is a better understanding of what determines tropical rainfall variability and its teleconnections to the rest of the atmosphere, which will lead to better predictability on daily to interannual time scales.
