Southern Ocean processes remote sensing of the ocean

Description of Scientific Projects

The Southern Ocean branch of the meridional overturning circulation is governed by a variety of factors: eddy-induced advection along isopycnal surfaces, mixing between isopycnal surfaces, and water mass transformation at the ocean surface. My research addresses these processes in several ways. Satellite data are used to evaluate surface air-sea exchanges and the upper ocean heat balance. I'm involved in the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project, which is deploying biogeochemical Argo floats throughout the Southern Ocean. I 'm also involved in modeling projects examining the dynamics governing the Southern Ocean and its interactions with the Antarctic margins. Other current research considers global processes (including analysis of the diurnal cycle and its impact on the climate system and evaluations of global ocean heat content change). In addition my group is involved in a number of satellite programs, including science analysis in preparation for the 2021 launch of the Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission.
