Description of Scientific Projects
I am P.I. for Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) Facility Development and have designed and built nine large FACE systems in the U.S., Europe and Central America. As P.I. (with W. Schlesinger) of the Forest Atmospher Carbon Transfer and Storage project located in the Duke Forest, NC, I am interested in improving the scaling-up of ecophysiological research to regional scales as an input to GCM activities.
We also participate in the AmeriFlux project. Currently, we are using a suite of perfluorocarbon tracers to help define source/ sink relationships in both horizontal and vertical plains. At the Florida AmeriFlux site, we installed a 30-meter tall walk-up tower fuly instrumented for making flux measurements and equipped with tracer samplers to permit evaluations of footprint scaling from several heights. The tower will be moved among AmeriFlux sites. There are 30 additional ~2m height walk-up tower sections available to us. We have several sets of sonic anemometers and LiCOR open-path infra-red gas analyzers available that may be applied in vairous configurations for intensive studies.
Another aspect of our field work in both AmeriFlux and FACE, is developing and providing fast data links to the internet for collaborating AmeriFlux sites. For example, we post data from remote sites to our web server in near-real-time
and maintain data servers for the FACE program.
