Description of Scientific Projects

Our group is involved in acquiring high quality ambient measurements of various trace gases on both ground-based and aircraft platforms employing the technique of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). Over the past several years we have participated in various NCAR and NOAA field campaigns to acquire ambient measurements of CO and CH2O, two important trace gases involved in the chemistry of the troposphere. In addition to data acquisition and numerous veracity tests in the laboratory to assure high measurement quality, our group also interacts quite closely with modelers in an attempt to further test our understanding of hydrocarbon oxidation mechanisms in the lower atmosphere. Finally, our group is also actively involved in numerous aspects of instrument development an effort to further improve measurement sensitivity. Specific information regarding these topics can be found in the following Journal of Geophysical Research (JGR) publications: 1. Harder et al., JGR, 102, 6267 - 6282, 1997. 2. Fried et al., JGR, 102, 6283 - 6296, 1997. 3. Fried et al., JGR, 102, 6253 - 6266, 1997. 4. Fried et al., Applied Physics B67, 317 - 330, 1998.
